Important: Mourning period for King Rama IX

Most will be aware that His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej passed away on October 13th, 2016. The government of Thailand subsequently announced a period of national mourning for 1 year, this period has been extended until October 27th, 2017. Although the games fall outside of the national mourning period this is still a profoundly sad one for the people of Thailand. It’s difficult to put into words the effect this has had on the entire nation.

For this reason we would like to remind all visitors to be considerate and respectful of the monarchy, culture and people of Thailand. You are not only representing yourself but also your club, Thailand GAA, the Embassy of Ireland and the people of Ireland as a whole.

Acts of disrespect towards the Monarchy carry serious criminal consequences.

Transport

Getting to Bangkok

There are 2 airports in Bangkok city. Both airports are international airports so it is important to check which airport you will be arriving into and departing from.

Don Mueang Airport (DMK)

Don Mueang Airport is located on the city’s north side. It can take between 30min – 1.30min  (by taxi) to get from the airport to players hotels and vice a versa depending on traffic.

NOTE: Air Asia ONLY fly to and from Don Mueang Airport. All international flights arrive and depart from terminal 1.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

Suvarnabhumi Airport in located on the city’s east side. It can take between 30min – 1.30min  (by taxi) to get from the airport to players hotels and vice a versa depending on traffic.

From the Airport to the Players Hotels

By Taxi

Bangkok’s taxis are some of the cheapest in the world but they are in some cases known to take advantage should the opportunity arise even at the airport. There are taxi stands and queuing systems at both airports and all taxis must be registered with the airport authorities.

A taxi form either airport to players hotels should cost between 250 and 350 THB (7-10 USD) depending on traffic. NOTE: There is a 50B airport surcharge. Taking the toll way is the fastest route however the passenger must pay the toll charge (50-90 THB). All taxis have a yellow registration plate outside and inside the taxi, note this registration in case you have a problem with the taxi.

NOTE: Most taxis will not have change of 1000B notes so it’s advisable to have some smaller domination notes when taking a taxi.

By Airport Rail Link

NOTE: The airport rail link is only available from Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The airport rail arrives and departs from the basement level of the airport, follow the sings for the rail link.

From the airport take the Airport Rail link to the end of the line (Phaya Thai, 45THB) when you exit the train follow the signs for Phaya Thai BTS, from here you will need to purchase a new ticket to Nana. Take the BTS Skytrain in the direction of ‘Bearing’ to Nana. The hotels are within 5 minutes walk of Nana BTS station.

Climate

November in Thailand is the end of the rainy season,

the sun normally shines for 8 hours per day, with temperatures generally settling between 24°C and 31°C.

The daily average temperature for Bangkok is usually around 28°C and there’s a good chance of a shower, so pack a raincoat just in case. It’s warm enough to wear shorts and a t-shirt, as it still feels humid in the city.
